Wiki link, but seeing as there’s little there, excuse the overly long details ahead!

Little of Charley's past - when he was human - isn't known, as of yet, in canon. From what can be noted, he was orphaned at a very, very young age [ read: three to four years old ] and wandered aimlessly until happening across Johnny (AKA "Master"). During a brief time, Johnny takes care of Charley much in the fashion of owning a pet, even going so far as to give him the name 'Chris' since he lacked one of his own. But times grew cold, dark, and rather desperate, particularly for a human child under the guidance of a vampire.

Johnny, in the best interests of Charley, leaves him to the care of nuns in a convent, where it is evident he spends many years growing up.

At present, the manga focuses on the intricacies of Johnny and Charley's relationship, as well as their current lifestyle some several decades later; yes, they have been reunited, and yes, they do live together. They have places in both Sacramento, California and San Francisco, of which Charley rarely sees as he is busy doing (however dirty) work for the Vatican. As with many other aspects, Johnny and Charley's reunion still remains a canonical mystery. However, there are noticeable differences in Charley's appearance and habits that were not present as a child; parts of him are cybernetic - at least: both arms, ears, and the back of his neck at the base of the skull - and also vampiric.

In sum, Charley is a walking statement of irony. He's a cyborg [ though the details as to why or how he became like this have yet to be revealed ] with the capacity for emotion. He is a devout Catholic and (would-be) priest in the service of the Vatican to dispose of vampires, e.g. a vampire hunter in addition to being a vampire. As Charley refuses to feed on anyone but Johnny, it's inevitable that he be brought along for missions that would keep him out of the country for lengthy periods of time.

» Vassalord

China - the trip there easy, Charley learns the true reason for his assignment: not a case sanctioned by the Vatican but a nun named Sister Famille. In exchange for keeping Charley's secret (apparently, no one makes the connection he's a cyborg/vampire mix) and giving him another vampire in their custody, he's to turn over the 'confined Elagabalus' AKA Johnny Rayflo AKA Master AKA Father AKA Charley's meal ticket. Decisions are hard, yo.

Against better judgment, Charley and Johnny arrive at the designated meeting place together. Dark, damp, and full of dead people. The other vampire meant for trade, also known as Princess Marie, turns out to be the true Confined Elagabalus, and a pretty hungry one at that. Her main goal is to have Johnny ditch Charley and come back to her so they can repeat their bloody history together. Charley, however, doesn't see that as an option - blah, blah, blah, they talk, they laugh only not so much, Johnny is frozen by Princess Marie's power, and--

Commence epic battle sequence: Charley vs. Princess Marie.

It's a pretty nasty fight, not going to lie; both Charley and Marie stomp each other into the ground. Charley's determination to finish her off is only limited by the fact he needs blood, and Johnny doesn't want to see his children fighting in front of "dad" (yeah, not going to touch that one). Still, Johnny gives Cherry his blood, and they fly off into the sunrise, repeating their kill or be killed act. Princess Marie AND Johnny turn to dust, though it's revealed shortly after - as Charley meets with the Vatican - that a vampire can withstand the sun as long as they turn into a bat and return to their coffin. Lo and behold.

He also turns down the position of priesthood the Vatican offers him.

Next best thing after that? Dinner and a church murder. Johnny is his charming gay self, doing his best to make Charley jealous, but Charley's more distracted with the fact he hasn't eaten in a week; lots of yummy people around to pounce on, obviously.

Several key characters are introduced then: Harold [ cute shotabait, aww ], Cheryl [ Charley's tiny female clone counterpart who is adorable and fiesty ], Craig [ badass mofo detective who loves chili dogs ], Rayfell [ Johnny's seeming twin, a match in almost every way other than sex ], and a mysterious paper that incidentally reads "Vassalord". Seriously, it's IMPORTANT.

After Charley's impromptu meal on Johnny, Cheryl interrupts them with a scythe to the wall beside them. Which she apologizes for, of course, upon discovering that Charley is a "true believer" and they were "curing Johnny of his illness of seducing every man he sees". Thus, a dead chick suddenly appears hanging on a huge cross. The fuzzpolice arrive, interrogating Johnny and Charley more then the other church-goers because they were in the confession room alone. Craig, the detective on scene, is the epitome of nice, calling Johnny a "fucking queer" and y'know, friendly stuff like that ♥ He doesn’t believe their story in particularly about Cheryl, either (she’s nowhere to be found). Luckily, Hal AKA Harold tells his version of the events, it all matches up, and everyone goes home. Later, they discover Cheryl is actually a vampire hunter hired by the church founder, Mr. Kazan, to determine the cause of all the mysterious deaths happening within the church.

Guess who decides to lend a helping hand? The answer's Mr. FlaymoRayflo ~

A few days later, Johnny arrives on the scene dressed/disguised as a woman (and isn't he sexy?) pretending to be an agent investigating the murders at the church while Charley and Cheryl tend to Mr. Kazan; Charley will be his bodyguard while Cheryl continues her own investigation. Cheryl takes her leave, and Charley is escorted by Mr. Kazan's assistant to a guestroom, wherein he [oh, yeah] remembers he needs to eat, Johnny appears to him as a "dream" as he feeds his son, and he wakes up slightly disoriented, wondering if everything had been a figment of his imagination or real. Insert some double-crossing by Mr. Kazan's assitant [ he leads female "Johnny" down into a secret tunnel, explaining how Mr. Kazan tries so hard to maintain his sanity during his illness and how he tries to lower or not even take his medication. (Which everyone knows is bad to begin with, anyway.) He goes on to reveal how Father Mailer, the one who happened to be flattened by the huge cross + dead chick combo, even helped Mr. Kazan with his illness by disposing of the victims and how the cross-tastrophe was most likely his way of putting an end to it all. There's light at the end of the tunnel, and unfortunately, "Johnny" (later revealed as Rayfell) is whacked unconscious by the assistant. Cheryl discovers the assistant later on, forcing him to show her the same tunnel, and upon finding a dead-end, creates a barrier around the church so that no vampire can regenerate.

Commence next epic battle sequence: Charley, Cheryl, Rayfell, Johnny vs. the blob-like vampire, Mr. Kazan.

That mess resolved, Charley discovers the truth about the female Johnny via Rayfell kissing him; the tip of Johnny's tongue is split in two and Rayfell's is not. Everything is resolved with sextimes in the bath. At least, until the next adventure--

Cue Charley and Johnny on a plane, Charley asleep and Johnny helping himself to a few moments of "sexual harassment" on the seemingly defenseless guy. He's faking, of course, and this incidentally leads to some snacking in the tiny airplane bathroom, interrupted when Johnny tries to unzip Charley's pants and sends them crashing into the aisle. A mysterious woman is found just outside trying to kill a flight attendant (for her blood). Charley saves the day, they end up in the cargo hold, and there, discover a box of body parts + a time bomb. Apparently suffering An Hero Syndrome that day, Charley slices a door into the side of the plane with the time bomb, and the three of them practice unsafe parachuting. They survive with only slight damage: Johnny banged up, Charley missing part of an arm, unconscious girl (who also happens to be a vampire OF COURSE) tied up. Both tender and emo moments are had; Charley becomes upset that Johnny feeds the girl, Miranda, with his blood. Still, they arrive at Cheryl's in mostly one piece.

Their original destination to begin with, Charley asks Cheryl about an ancestor of hers named Arnold Paole:

According to the story, Arnold was a volunteer solider who accumulated a lot of wealth, and as that goes, he married a rich farmer’s daughter who inquired about the darkness that always troubled him. Arnold explained how he'd met a vampire in Greece and how this vampire had 1) sucked his blood and 2) wanted to make him his slave. He'd refused by stabbing the vampire with a huge stake, thus releasing himself from the vampire’s control. He then returned to his village, but the curse of the vampire followed him whereever he went. Soon after telling the story to his wife, Arnold dies in a strange farming accident. He's laid to rest, but strange events began to occur throughout the village. Many of the villagers believed it was Arnold causing all the trouble. A few men from the military dug up Arnold’s body and discovered that in the past months since his death, his body had not rotted; his hair and nails were longer, and he had blood around his mouth. They concluded that he was a vampire and set his body ablaze. It's unclear if he survived that.

Cheryl does reveal, however, she is a descendent of a relative of who Paole had killed and given his blood. Gotta love how all that's inter-connected. Meanwhile, Johnny is keeping the young Miranda "company" and finds himself caught in a kiss. Charley enters the room, STARES, and informs Miranda that they must part ways. She leaves, telling them to "find the Vassalord", which pings Charley's memory circuits [ recall the papers he encountered at the party? ]. That being that, Charley surprised Johnny with a kiss to the cheek, and a little while later, they see Miranda on TV (she's an actress) and witness her death via car explosion. A creepy phone call leaves Johnny completely WTF, as it tells him that his "blood is valuable and shouldn't be wasted".

Cut to Johnny enjoying a nice bath, rudely interrupted by Craig barging into the apartment; he seems to be searching for someone/something. Charley is unable to keep him out of the bathroom, though Johnny has already disappeared before then by turning into bats. They decide to exchange information about the case, chilling on a local bench, pigeons included. MALE BONDING TIME IS GO. Elsewhere, Johnny arrives at his mansion - being a vampire has its perks - and is found later by Rayfell. They engage in a chat about several things, Barry being one of them. Seems like Mr. Rayflo's been avoiding. Rayfell leaves, and Charley eventually shows up, once again "trying" to kill Johnny. Their mock fights end as they always do: Johnny being drained and Charley being fed.

Hal, the adorable little kid with the eyepatch (oh yeah, he's also in a wheelchair), somehow manages to escape his captors as they drive by and is rescued by Sacra and one of Johnny's blood maids. Harold is grateful, though a little depressed and has some slight (read: borderline major) father issues. He informs Charley that his father makes "weird drugs" and he never gets to see him. Johnny leaves them after overhearing their little talk, having written Cherry a note.

ENTER: Barry.

Can you say androgynous psycho creeper bitch? He's let in through the window by Johnny, who mistakes him for Charley [ Barry can change shape ]. There's a mini epic battle, but in the end, Barry forces Johnny to submit. AKA he rapes Johnny and does so using Charley's face. Who said this series was for kids? Minea, another of Johnny's blood maids (who is also a cat, uh huuuh), managed to escape, immediately calling Charley despite being wounded. He comes to the rescue, first picking up Minea from the phone booth - there, he encounters Barry as a creepy child thing, who he politely excuses himself from after Minea hisses at "it". From there, it's a sorrowful, heart-wrenching reunion; Charley's room is destroyed and Johhny is in the middle of it, pretending to be drunk as an excuse for the mess he caused. Charley, however, doesn't buy it at all (there's no alcohol on his breath), and he hoses Johnny down. This image may not be suitable for minors. Johnny ends up shoving Charley away from him and wandering off to his coffin as Barry has a little spy keeping tabs on them in the room.

In between this and Charley's elopementtrip to Italy, Craig gets in with the wrong people [ having given up his badge for "time off" ]; some nameless guy, who is referred to as #86, he's keeping (like a pet) in his apartment and Liu Yaoding. He's your typical bad guy, only wanting immortality. Tall order and all. Craig offers to trade #86 for Alford Wayne's whereabouts. He's Hal's father. Needless to say, they get distracted tossing fruit and talking about the man Yaoding has stashed in his basement. Charley, in disguise, infiltrates said place with some help; he pretends to get caught so they toss him into same prison basement as Yaoding's prisoner. It works, and now that he's in, he has to bust out -- with the in-poor-health objective. PAPA TO THE RESCUE Johnny slips past the guards with the most ridiculous camouflage ever. [Before showing up in Italy, Johnny had been participating in a tag-and-maim with Barry. Which is still a go.] Charley has a quick bite (notice any patterns yet?), and they flee the scene; Johnny also departs without specific cause or where he's heading.

Charley, out of secret grief, buries himself in work with Craig and Hal and booze. When Johnny thinks he's finally rid himself of the creeper, he sends a lovely little package and a note to Charley to join him for a night on the town. Dressed for the opera, Phantom of the Opera to be exact, Charley meets with Johnny in a private box. They chat, Charley indulges in a super late dinner right there, and it so happens Barry is not dead; he's sitting across from them in another box, watching. What a TROLL. Shortly after, they leave the play...right into EPIC BATTLE BARRY TIME, which ends in Barry being beheaded (but not dead) and Charley calling on the help of some demons to save Johnny.

Rather than demons, however, Alford Wayne (who’s really Harold) bargains with Charley to save Johnny’s life. Afterwards, he blackmails Charley into becoming a famous model so as to “get in” with a certain politician in exchange for Johnny’s safety [ despite the fact Wayne has been testing Johnny’s blood for a long, long time clones everywhere ]. Eventually, the man they found in the basement of the Italian prison goes undercover, and after giving him a hair cut (so he wouldn’t look so much like Charley’s master), Charley takes him on as his secretary and names him Raymond.

[ Personality ] :
At first glance, Charley is your typical devout Catholic wannabe priest: he's faithful [ Goes to Mass? Yes, he does. Prays? Almost religiously. ], works especially hard for the Vatican [ killing vampires ], and is generally polite to/gets along well with everyone. Almost. He has a trusting face despite the lack of smiles and solemn demeanor.

However, Charley's confliction between his religion and his reality heavily influence who he is as a person...vampire-robot. For most vampires, it is a necessity to kill to live; seeing as how that breaks one of God's Laws, Charley is extremely against this. Instead, through sheer force of will [ really, you'll never see anyone with as much self control as Charley ], he forgoes eating for lengthy periods of time - it varies from several days to a week, maybe even longer than that. This faux fasting, as Charley sees it, also helps him to become closer to God. Sometimes, he doesn't realize how far he's pushed himself until the bloodlust snaps him. Typically, though, he feeds from one person and one person only: Johnny Rayflo, his Master. Since Johnny is a vampire and feeding from him isn't murder, Charley is a little more comfortable with the idea. The killing of evil (usually other vampires) in the name of God also helps to fulfill that sense of duty so deeply ingrained in him. Any normal person can see this thinking is slightly backwards, but give him a break. He puts his religion and God before himself, the well being of others as well.

This makes him out to be the good guy, right?

Well...yeah. He's a chivalrous robot unicorn soul - noteably more so whenever Johnny is involved - and puts forth everything he has when he's needed. No backing down from this one; he'll fight until every last resource has been exhausted and still try to continue going (his fight against Princess Marie is a good example of this). His loyalty - both to God and Johnny - is strong, and his compassion goes hand-in-hand with it. His humanity makes Charley oddly unique and vulnerable. The capacity of caring and love - though Johnny would fully disagree as Charley usually treats him like that of a spoiled child rather than an old man the grown adult he is - he possesses for his master rivals that of what he feels for God. Generally, it causes a deeply conflicted outlook for Charley: Johnny is the exception to every rule, but he will continue on a righteous path toward the right choices. In fact, Charley even confesses to Johnny early on that he fears he is losing sight of God because of the decisions he's made. He also says he has a weak will; which, to everyone else, especially Johnny, is a lie. What can you do with someone so fixed in their ways? Still, his attachment to Johnny does not waver.

Aside from this continuous inner battle of God vs. Johnny, Charley can also be very stubborn and easily annoyed [ depending on the company he is keeping ]. Fathers (read: Johnny) bring out the best in their children, really. He is often insulting Johnny about his age and chastising him about some of his habits, usually when they could result in something harmful to himself or others around him. Think of it as Charley being that boy on the playground who shows the girl he likes his affection by doing mean, horrible things. Perhaps not so drastic, since Charley would never physically hurt Johnny, but close enough ♥ Also, Charley is far from dimwitted or clueless. He is actually very intelligent -- hey, he managed to turn parts of himself into an efficient, cybernetic machine. He's known to be rather thorough when investigating his cases for the Vatican; he KNOWS 2+2=4 without much hinting. Come on, his brain is hardwired to a computer. And perhaps, if he wasn't a Catholic Fighting Automaton, he'd make a pretty decent detective.

Note: Charley's nickname, Cherry, is derived from the fact he is very virginal (and Charley sounds close to Cherry in Japanese, haha phonetics). Okay, not quite that virginal, but enough so that Johnny teases him for it. This makes him an inevitable cockblock. Boooo.

[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
Vassalord’s world circulates around many myths of vampire lore: vampires cannot enter places unless first invited, garlic can be used as a ward, sunlight and holy water are deadly. And yet, being a Catholic vampire-slash-cyborg certainly has its perks. Strangely enough, despite being a creature of the night, Charley can withstand sunlight and go about as he pleases, giving him a somewhat normal appearance. His “human” abilities, however, end there and become integrated with those of being a vampire--namely, a marginal increase in strength [ he can carry around an adult-sized coffin with a body inside ] and classic bloodlust. Given his great focus and determination, he doesn’t feed as often or carelessly as most vampires, and he only drinks from his Master. Not entirely unusual.

...but it’s when his machine enhancements are explored that things tend to get a little on the crazy side. Vampire, sure. Mass-attending and God-loving, okay. Uploading and downloading data via a cyborg dog like a computer? Priceless! Most of his body - known parts being his ears, the back of his neck, and the entirety of his arms (including his hands) - has been replaced to assist in his work with the Vatican as well as his attempts to “kill” Johnny or other vampires. His fingertips are retractable as well as capable of producing one million volts; detachable hands that can be shot like rockets (rocket hands!); a special stake made of silver and amnion dubbed Iron Maiden; needles mixed with mercury and holy water; built-in knives lovingly called Diamond Cutter. Due to so many upgrades, his memory isn’t as good as it should be; there are certain things from his past he cannot recall clearly.

Charley, so obviously being a fighting machine, is adept at combat and handling himself in physical situations. He can use a sword - which he somehow manages to stash on his person - as well as toss a grenade or two at his opponent(s) if necessary.

However, due to where he's being taken from in canon, he will not have ANY enchancements whatsoever. He'll have all his original parts--therefore, he'll be subject to burning when touching silver, ears burning when hearing gospels, unable to recite the Bible without damage to his vocal cords. He will only be able to walk in sunlight which is still a mystery to everyone and maintain his lust for blood.

[ Other Important Facts ] :
If possible, Charley will be entering Vatheon with Sacra, his robo-partner-in-crime doggie companion, at his side.
